March -2012 Edison Research says Internet Radio usage has jumped 30% so far in 2012 -- an increase they attribute mostly to the smartphone. The weekly usage of Internet radio has increased from 22% of Americans 12+ in 2011 to 29% in 2012 – a jump of over 30%. This is a number has grown bit by bit each year, but this is the largest year-over-year increase since people began tracking this stat in 1998.

Dec- 2011 The Center for the Digital Future at the USC Annenberg School for Communication looked at how people are using media and the internet. Their research found that 22% of Americans are using the internet to listen to the radio. That’s the same number that now uses the web to pay bills.

Jan - 2011 The U.S. Census Bureau has released a revenue report . Revenues for FM/AM radio broadcasting came in at $15.9 billion, down from $18.2 billion in 2008 and $18.9 billion in 2006. FM/AM Radio stations showed a steady decline from $14.8 billion in 2007, to $23.9 billion in 2008 and $11.6 billion in 2009, 16.2% decline. Internet radio continues to grow in revenue and listeners.

Dec-2010 The amount of time spent online is up 121% over the past five years, according to Forrester Research's new "Understanding the Changing Needs of the U.S. Online Consumer" report for 2010. Time spent on the Internet has, for the first time, caught up with time spent watching television. U.S. consumers spend about 13 hours a week with TV and 13 hours on the Internet. TV viewing is up 5% over the past five years. The added time spent on the Internet is reducing the amount of time spent with AM/FM radio, newspapers, and other media. Forrester says that time spent listening to broadcast radio is down 15% over the past five years. Time spent with newspapers is down 26% over the same time, while time spent with magazines is down 18%. Additionally, Forrester is projecting that 91% of online households will be using broadband by the end of the year.

May-2009 AM/FM Radio local ad revenues fell 26% in the first quarter to $2.35 billion over 2008 totals. National revenue was down 27% to $473 million. When combined, local and national sales declined 26% to $2.83 billion, reports the RAB. Network radio was down 13% to $238 million and off-air revenue decreased 12% to $264 million. Internet radio/ad revenue was the only gainer, rising 13% to $101 million.

In 2008 AM/FM radio's revenue evaporated as internet revenues grew 11% last year to $23.4 billion. That’s $3.9 billion more than AM/FM radio. It's the first time the web has beat AM/FM radio.
